Web Design Tutorial
Upload Web Page

Copying files from your hard drive to the server is a simple process. Once you've signed up with a web hosting company it's now time to publish your new web site to your web hosting server. When you direct your editor to publish your site your web hosting server will prompt you for the name of the directory on your hard drive where your files are stored and the file names to be uploaded. To avoid confusion, make certain that all files are saved on the server using  the same file names that you used on your hard drive. The only software that you require to upload files is a web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. Alternatively, FTP software (File Transfer Protocol) can be used. Ideally use the purchased HTML editor software to build and upload your web pages to your web hosting server. FrontPage makes it quick and easy to upload with very simple steps guided by prompts built into the software itself.

Once you have uploaded all your files, you should test your page that are now on the web server by viewing it online through different web browsers. Look over each page and test all links to make certain that it functions properly and that all files have uploaded correctly. It is also a good idea to test your page using a different computer to ensure that graphic files are in fact being read from the server and not from your hard drive. This is a common problem. It is always wise to look up at the very top of your monitor an see if the tool bar reads as being a web site online or reads as your own files in your PC's hard drive. It happens.

If all is well, it's now time to congratulate yourself! If there are problems, don't panic, no one will see your web site when you first upload it. You have a few days at least before the search engines find it and begin offering it in search results.

You have published your very first web site!
